If you are in the mood for a great story told by a master storyteller, I highly recommend this book.
Douglas Adams is most known for his Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy (which is also fantastic), but this book stands on its own and packs a different punch.
The story is too nuanced and strange to recap, but it revolves around one of my favorite themes–the notion that the old gods who used to roam the Earth are still among us, but are of no use in modern society.
Long Dark Tea-Time might be classified as a detective story, it revolves around the ‘holistic detective’ Dirk Gently, but it is much more than that–it is filled with myth, imagination, and deep human truths.
Its one of those books that you walk away from and are able to see the world in a different light.
Dirk Gently is a detective with a gift for asking exactly the right questions, no matter how strange they seem.
His interactions with women are hilarious and provide dialogue that made me burst out in laughter.
I’d recommend reading this book in as short a time period as you can since the plot can be get confusing if you forget minor details.
But stick with it, and it will prove to be one of the most rewarding stories of your life.
