Notice the Details

Pick up on the little things.

Its something that doesn’t come natural to most men. Many of us like seeing the big picture, making generalizations, and taking the birds eye view.

Thats ok and all good–we like to get shit done, do it efficiently, and have a vision. A lot of the time, that requires ignoring details.

But women go crazy when you describe nuances, quirks and hidden cues.

For instance, my gorgeous French Canadian girl from the Montreal story grew the puppy dog eyes as soon as I mentioned a seemingly small detail from our first encounter.

It was a key turning point in our conversation, the thing that led right to sex. When we first met (read the story to find out about this unique encounter!), about a minute in to our first moments of getting to know one another–she asked if we could move out of the shade and on to the sunny side of the street. “Sure” I said and made a mental note.

There have been many French girls that have come and gone (some keep returning) in my life, I spent a month driving through France and a few weeks in Paris…and I have dated/banged quite a few in New York.

French women are obsessed with being on the sunny side of the street.

Its a great little quirk of theirs that I have always found too cute to ignore. Sometimes, when walking around with them, I would push them in to the shade and keep them there until they promised a blowjob or some other favor. They would kick and scream like little girls until finally giving in and then making out hard in the sun. Good times.

So when this French-Can girl said she wanted to go in the sun, I kept that little gold nugget of information and stored it away for later.

We met for drinks later that night, had a nice conversation, kissed, and I wanted to escalate. At a crucial moment, I said “You know what I thought was really cute this morning? When you asked to step in to the sun–it was so very French of you.”

She just about swooned after hearing that and we kissed some more–this time with the passion ramped up. It wasn’t long after that I was deep inside her.

So get some practice noticing the small things. It requires you to get out of your own head and be observant. My long history of writing, photography, and observing nature has given me decades of experience. Without it, there is no way I would be able to catch such seemingly insignificant moments such as when a girl asks to step in to the sun.

You can practice catching details and becoming more observant in many ways.

When I was young, I was obsessed with animal behavior. I would spend hours in the forest trying to find animals, watching birds, and flipping logs over to try and figure out what was going on underneath. I still try to do these things whenever possible. I’m convinced these activities were key to advancing my perceptive skills.

Start taking photos–not with a point-and-shoot, but with a DSLR, a camera with a viewfinder. Photography is a hobby with rewards that spill over to every aspect of life. It makes you focus on the most pleasing, interesting, and beautiful parts of a scene. You look at the world differently with a camera.

Read literature. Notice how the masters can break down a scene and catch the invisible things that connect everything like glue.

Writing is a great way to organize your thoughts, reflect on your decisions, and remember details. Every man should have a journal to keep track of his life.

The more you write, the more you will be able to notice what really matters. Even if you don’t think you are good at it, try and write down why. You will be surprised at the things that will come out. Always keep learning about yourself and what you contain deep inside, writing will bring it to the surface.

Go for a walk with one purpose in mind–it could be the color of peoples eyes, their clothes, shoes, hair–whatever requires you to focus on things that would normally be ignored.

Pick up a detail oriented hobby:

  • Ping Pong
  • Pool
  • Darts
  • Fooseball
  • Hacky Sack
  • Surfing
  • Cooking
  • Sculpture
  • Painting
  • Drawing
  • Fishing

*For some, smoking marijuana heightens their sense of focus. It is something I enjoy before things like surfing, snowboarding and fishing. For other things, like game and being social, it hinders me and I avoid it then.

All of those activities require strong attention to detail if you want to master them.

Do it, make the skill a part of your life and apply it in everything. Become great, enthrall women, and make the most of your short time on this planet.
